Assignments where the main focus is a politician, public figure or speaker are boring. Sorry. I had to say it. Photos will mostly all come out looking the same, featuring talking heads and a podium.
However, don’t let that stop you from taking amazing photos.
Play with light. Grab the detail of the speaker’s eyes and the wrinkles of their face. Shoot from an angle that will silhouette the speaker and focus on the audience. Use the silhouettes of audience members to frame the speaker’s body. Wait at the end of the speech to get photos of the speaker interacting with other people.
Do something interesting. Challenge yourself.
I’m afraid the images below won’t highlight the creative goals I wrote above, but they’re photos of the most “impressive” people I’ve taken photos of. Beyond them, some of the best talking head photos I’ve taken have been for local community events, academic lectures or literary readings (there’ll be more posts featuring those photos in the near future).
